The importance of backup

March 31 is World Backup Day. This day was once created to make Internet users aware of backing up. The main message: backing up protects your data! And with that, we've actually already got the main reason for backing up. But there are more reasons why backing up your (more important) data is so important. In this blog post, we'll tell you all about it!

What exactly is a backup?

First, let's go back to the basics. What exactly is a backup? A backup is a copy of data made as a kind of precaution against loss of (important) data. When we talk about a backup, we can actually distinguish three different types: A full backup makes a copy of all the data and files on your system, while an incremental backup saves only the changes since the last backup. A differential backup saves only the changes since the last full backup.

By the way, OXXA only performs full backups because we believe that your data is the most important thing. With a full backup, you can rest assured that your data is safe with OXXA!

As a Managed Service Provider, we are often asked in what frequency a backup should be done. The most common frequency of backup is weekly or daily. But it very much depends on how often data changes and how important the data is to you(your company). At OXXA, we always place backups of data on a so-called external backup server. This ensures that backups are always available in the event of a disaster.

The importance of backups

  1. Protection against data loss
By regularly backing up your (most important) data, you arm yourself against unforeseen events such as a hardware failure or a malware infection. Even human error in this case need not be fatal to your data.
  2. Continuity of your business operations
If you are a director or manager, your data is critical to the continuity of your business operations or your department. After all, data loss can lead to financial losses, reputational damage or reduced productivity. By regularly backing up your data, you ensure that your business or department can keep running even if an incident occurs.
  3. Protecting confidential information
If you store sensitive or confidential information, backing it up is vital to ensure that it is not lost or falls into the wrong hands. By creating backups, you can ensure that you can keep this information safe and recover it in the event of a failure or incident.
  4. Cost savings
Creating backups can be cost-saving. If you lose data and don't have a backup, you may have to use an expensive data recovery service to recover the lost data. By backing up regularly, you can avoid these costs and ensure that your data is safe.
  5. Save time
If you have a backup behind you of your most important data, you are assured of restoring your systems. This is because in the event of an incident, there is no need to reconfigure and reconfigure everything; your backup is your salvation! That saves an enormous amount of time!
