The impact of NIS2 on .DE and .DK domains: what does it mean for you as a reseller?

The European NIS2 directive aims to strengthen digital security within the EU. Domain name registrations are also covered by these regulations. Registries of .DE and .DK domains, among others, have therefore tightened their requirements around registrant data. For you as a reseller of domain names, hosting and SSL certificates, this means that correct and verifiable customer data are more important than ever

What does NIS2 mean for domain registries?

NIS2 requires registries to better establish who the holder of a domain name is. Contact details must be complete, current and verifiable. This leads to stricter checks for new registrations, transfers and holder changes. Existing domains will also be actively checked

Changes for .DK domains

For .DK domains, a valid phone number is mandatory for new registrations, transfers and changes. Organizations are also subject to a mandatory VAT/CVR number. Incomplete or fictitious data are not allowed. The registry also actively checks that e-mail addresses are functioning. If data prove to be incorrect, the domain name holder can be contacted directly for verification. If there is no response, the domain name may eventually be deleted

For existing .DK domains, a valid phone number must be added by April 2027 if still missing

Changes for .DE domains

Full and correct contact information is also required for .DE domains, including a valid phone number. Registrations without a valid number will be rejected. In addition, details of legal entities will become visible in the public Whois. Using a role-based e-mail address, such as info@ or support@, is therefore recommended

Starting April 14, 2026, registrants will receive an annual request to check their data. Failure to do so may ultimately result in the domain name being deleted. Existing domains with missing or incorrect phone numbers must be updated by April 2027
